Introduction to Roof Framing

This course covers the concepts, mathematics, layout, and cutting of a stick framed roof system. Students will build a gable roof frame, and if time permits, a hip roof. The curriculum will also cover code compliance, building science, sheathing, shingling, and other styles of roof framing.

Tools & Supplies: All tools and supplies will be provided for this class.

Introduction to Windows & Doors

The windows and doors course covers the installation and weatherproofing of flange-mounted windows and pre-hung residential doors. The curriculum will also cover the building code and building science issues concerning the flashing and insulation issues of modern windows.

Introduction to Drywall

The drywall course covers the cutting and installation of drywall board and a three-step mudding and taping process for smooth walls. The course will cover the basic techniques of drywall installation and the potential issues that can occur. If time permits, we will also cover basic techniques of patching drywall.

Introduction to Exterior Trim

The exterior trim course will cover the installation of the water table, corner boards, frieze, soffit, fascia, and exterior window casing. The materials for this course will include readily available stock and profiles that can be procured at any general lumber yard or building center. Techniques include mitered corners and the light milling of stock for joinery and integration of siding. The course will also include a discussion of and, if time permits, the installation of clapboard and shingle siding.

The interior trim course will cover the installation of the baseboard, base cap, crown molding, and interior window and door casing. The materials for this course will include readily available profiles that can be procured at any general lumber yard or building center. Techniques include coped and mitered corners and the light milling of stock. The course will also include a discussion of planning and choosing molding for residential installation.

Tools & Supplies: All tools and supplies will be provided for this class.
