18th Century Trade Binding

Hours: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Instructors: Jeff Altepeter BB '99 & Todd Pattison

In this workshop, students will create a model of a typical 18th-century style full calf binding. We will examine and discuss a variety of French, English, and American traditions using 18th-century bindings and historic models with a goal of deciphering the working methods and construction of 18th-century leather bindings based on the visible elements in surviving examples. 18th-century descriptions of bookbinding will be discussed, but the majority of the information presented will be derived from the record of existing bindings.

This is an excellent opportunity to delve into laced-board binding structures, sewing on raised cords, and leather binding techniques while at the same time exploring the most common binding style in the 18th century and the variations in technique between France, England, and America.

Tools & Supplies: Students should bring a leather paring knife only if they already own one, and their favorite hand tools. All tools and supplies are provided for this class.

Interested in woodworking and looking for a way to get started? This introductory course is designed to give beginner students an overview of shop safety as well as some of the most common machines and hand tools used in woodworking. We work towards the completion of a small project while building basic skills and getting comfortable with machinery and working at the bench. This class is geared toward beginners looking to get a peek into woodworking. Advanced Woodworking Technique: Housed Tapered Dovetail

$275

with Ellen Kaspern CF '03

Calendar Nov 8, 2025 at 8:30 am, runs for 1 week

Date: Saturday, November 8th

Hours: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Instructor: Ellen Kaspern CF '03

Teaching Assistant: Alana Schwartz CF '25

This course focuses on the steps to execute housed tapered dovetails using a router table and some handwork. Unlike non-tapered sliding dovetails, which can swell during glue-up and become stuck, the tapered version only becomes tight at the very end of the assembly process, allowing for a more controlled and stress-free fit. Each student will make a mid-century wall shelf using housed tapered dovetails. As well, we will discuss and look at different samples of this joint in class. Housed tapered dovetails are great for case work, shelves, and knock-down
